I was lucky enough to be invited by Dive Planet to join them on a familiarisation trip to São Tomé, basing ourselves on Ilheu Das Rolas (Rolas Island) for most of the trip. “Where is that?” I hear you ask…
Every good trip starts with a lift to the airport from a loved one and scubadog Mika was there to step up to the mark.
We flew the best route from London with TAP Portugal, with a layover in Lisbon, where they kindly kept our luggage in transit while we explored some of the nightlife and had a good sleep.
We then boarded our flight to São Tomé, with a quick fuelling stop in Accra, Ghana. I’d highly recommend a window seat to be able to admire the fantastic views as you cross the Med, fly over Africa and then over the Gulf of Guinea (part of the North Atlantic) to São Tomé.
The airline itself is acceptable (seats were clean and comfy, leg room ok, bring your own entertainment!) and they cater well for special diets.
Arrival in São Tomé was friendly and relatively efficient for a small island nation!
